What is wrong with this food chain?

Arrows are facing the wrong direction! Arrows need to face toward where the energy is flowing.

100

The closest watershed you can find to Newburg is the Ohio River.

What is wrong with this statment?

A watershed is land where any rainfall occurs! We are currently in a watershed now!

Estuaries contain fresh water that is perfect for humans to drink!

Estuaries are a MIX of fresh and salt water.

100

The fact that fishermen lose their jobs and the price of fish goes up because of dead zones is an environmental impact.

This is actually an economic impact because it effects the money and costs of things! (Also, social because it effects people's lives.)

100

Biodiversity does not decrease because of climate change. There are a lot of animals that can survive at different temperatures!

Climate change will still kill off animals and species that cannot survive the varying temperatures meaning the variety of organisms will decrease and so biodiversity decreases!

200

What is wrong with this picture?

It is not a web! It is a chain! A web means there needs to be a lot of different relationships between organisms. Not just a chain!

200

Rain that falls in the light pink region can end up in either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean! It just depends on which part of the pink watershed you are in!

The light pink watershed only filters rain toward the Atlantic Ocean through the Gulf of Mexico!

"When the dissolved oxygen level decreases, then the population of fish increases or stays the same because fish do not need dissolved oxygen like humans to survive."

What is wrong with this statment?

Fish actually do need dissolved oxygen to survive! So, their population decreases if the amount of dissolved oxygen decreases.

200

Humans have no impact on biodiversity because there are still so many species we have yet to discover or understand. We cannot impact something we don't understand.

Many human actions have harmful impacts on biodiversity like cutting down rainforests means lots of species go extinct. Maybe even species we never knew, we still caused their extinction!

The student Mariel said "producers get their energy from the sun. The sun performs photosynthesis to provide this energy."

What is wrong about Mariel's statement?

The sun does not perform photosynthesis, the producer performs photosynthesis.

300

The water that lands in Kentucky only stays in Kentucky.

It actually drains into larger bodies of water and makes its way to the ocean or it evaporates and the water cycle restarts.

300

The largest estuary in United States is in the San Francisco Bay!

The largest Estuary in the US is actually the Chesapeake Bay in Washington DC!

300

Fish are the abiotic factor in a dead zone that decreases.

What is wrong with this statment?

Fish are actually the BIOTIC factor in a dead zone that decreases. Biotic means living. Abiotic means nonliving.

300

People will make more money if we have less species of animals to worry about on the planet and biodiversity is lower.

Having more variety means more options and humans don't have to put stress on one species! Humans can sell and benefit economically!

400

The student Jerod said, "Primary consumers are omnivores, they eat meat and plants. However, they do not make their own through photosynthesis."

What is wrong about this statment?

Primary consumers only eat plants! They are the first part of the chain on the food web.

400

Everything downstream ends up upstream! The force of evaporation pulls pollutants into our atmosphere!

Everything upstream actually ends up downstream! The force of gravity causes pollutants to move down mountains and into rivers and eventually the ocean.

400

Rainfall will often bring excess nutrients to estuaries through fertilizer. This is good because it helps aquatic plants like algae grow and thrive!

Actually, this can be harmful because fertilizer while helpful to our gardens can cause too much algae which can overwhelm the food web and cause increasing decomposition of dead algae which means less oxygen, killing the fish.

400

The cause of dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico are from fishermen who live on the coast area and pour fertilizer into the estuaries.

Actually, farmers all over the country contribute to dead zones with their use of fertilizers and pesticides that add nitrogen to their watersheds which end up downstream.

400

Large scale fishing only had positive economic impacts for the people in Chesapeake Bay because the fishermen got more money and fish prices went down.

Actually it destroyed the foodweb causing lots of environmental damages and fish ultimately became rare meaning fish prices went up!

500

What is wrong with this food web?

The mushroom is a decomposer which means it "eats" or breaks down the other organisms for energy. So the arrows should be facing toward the mushroom.

Zooplankton is a primary consumer often found in estuaries that get their energy from the sun!

Phytoplankton not zooplankton!

500

In a dead zone the amount of algae decreases.

In a dead zone the amount of algae increases and this mass of algae is great for bacteria/decomposers to eat and it takes up oxygen!

Samantha had never heard the word Biodiversity before. She has no way of figuring out what it means without using Google or a dictionary or asking a friend.

Samantha can break down the word into parts!

Bio means living (like biography, biology or biotic)

Diversity means variety!

So it means a variety of living things!
