Proclamations are made by the President for the nation, or governors for state-specific events. Key dates include Memorial Day (until noon), for 30 days upon a President's death, and 10 days for a Vice President.

Describe how to raise a flag to "half-staff"

The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

How are flags usually retired?

Burning. If burning is banned or unsafe, a U.S. flag can be respectfully retired by dropping it off at official collection sites (VFW, American Legion, Boy Scouts) for proper disposal, or by burying it in a dignified, folded manner. Other options include dismantling the flag (separating the blue field from the stripes) or finding a funeral home to include it in a, cremation.
