Before the surgery, Charlie is scared, nervous, and anxious when he takes different tests. Still, he is very motivated as he is taking the tests because he wants to have this surgery and become smarter. After the surgery he gets frustrated, angry and thinks the tests are stupid because he thinks nothing is happening after the operation.

Charlie doesn't like to race with Algernon because Algernon always beats Charlie. It makes him feel dumb that a mouse can beat him.
