Forces in Water
100

What is force?

A push or pull on an object

100

What are the four forces of flight?

Lift, Weight, Thrust, Drag

100

What is a fluid?

Any materials that something can move through. (liquids and gases)

200

What is a contact force? Define and give an example.

A force that requires touch to act on an object. Examples may vary

200

How does force effect flight? (4)

Altitude, movement, speed, straight and level flight

200

What is buoyancy?

upward push exerted by the fluid on an object that opposes gravity. Helps objects float.

300

What is a non contact force? Define and give an example.

A force that acts on an object without touching it. Examples may vary. (magnets, static, gravity)

300

How do aerodynamics work?

We use aerodynamics to reduce the amount of drag on an object which makes it easier for them to fly.

300

What is density?

How tightly packed the particles in matter are.

400

What is an external force?

Any force acting on the object from the outside. Can be contact or non contact. All forces we talk about are external.

400

How does thrust in an airplane work? Hint: think about propellers or an engine.

As the propellers move or fuel is added to the engine, air passes through. As it is pushed backwards through the engine/propellers it causes an opposite force to thrust the plane forwards.

400

How does density of an object affect buoyancy?

If an object is more dense than the fluid it will be unable to float and therefore is not buoyant.

500

How does force affect an object's movement? (3)

Can make it stop or slow down, change direction
500

Explain Bernoulli's Principle. (Hint: Think about lift and the airplane wings)

Air goes above and below the wing. The air underneath is a higher pressure so it pushes the wing up since high pressure air wants to get to lower pressure above the wing.
