During this period, the U.S. and the Soviet Union never went to war but the did stockpile and build hundreds of thousands of nuclear weapons and aided international conflicts around the world with foreign aid such as weapons, troops, and investment. The U.S. became involved in several international conflicts to prevent the influence of the Soviet Union and Communism from spreading throughout the world (i.e., Containment; a US policy of stopping the spread of communism).
