Why did the founding fathers not want a confederal or a unitary system of government?

The U.S. had a unitary system of government under the british. The founders did not want to give too much power to the national government and form a tyrannical government similar to British rule over the colonies. 

The U.S. experimented with a confederal system of government with the Articles of Confederation, but the national government was too weak and states could not be controlled.
