100
3 / 7 - What is the top number called? What is the bottom number called?
Numerator; Denominator
100
Express 18 ÷ 7 as an improper fraction
18/7
100
Add. Be sure to simplify your answer! 5/10 + 3/10 =
4/5
100
1 1/2 + 3 1/4 =
4 3/4
100
Why do we need a common denominator when adding/subtracting fractions?
The pieces must be the same size (have the same denominator) in order to combine fractions (add) or take parts away (subtract).
200
What is a fraction?
Part of a whole
200
Express 25 ÷ 7 as an improper fraction
25/7
200
Add. Be sure to simplify your answer! 5/6 + 2/3 =
1 1/2
200
3 2/3 - 1 1/4 =
2 5/12
200
Is 4/9 in simplest form? Why or why not?
Yes. 4/9 is in simplest form. There are no common factors of 4 and 9. (4 and 9 cannot be evenly divided by the same number)
300
Draw 2 pictures that represent 1/4.
(Ms. Sanchez will draw on the board).
300
Convert the following mixed number to a an improper fraction: 6 8/9
62/9
300
3/4 - 3/10=
9/20
300
5 3/10 - 1 4/5 =
3 1/2
300
Are 3/4, 6/8, and 15/20 equivalent? Why or why not?
Yes they are equivalent. When each fraction is reduced to its simplest form (there are no longer factors of the numerator and denominator) each fraction has a value of 3/4.
400
What operations do fractions represent?
Division!
400
Convert the following improper fraction to a mixed number in simplest form: 49/5
9 4/5
400
7/8-2/5=
19/40
400
7 3/5 + 8 7/15 =
16 1/15

Why does the "shortcut" for converting a MIXED NUMBER to an IMPROPER fraction work?
When converting a mixed number to an improper fraction you multiply the denominator of your fraction by your whole number because you are asking how many "total parts" are there in the amount of wholes we have. You then add the numerator of your fraction because you not only want to know how many parts are in the whole but in the whole and the the parts that you have.
500
What does the numerator represent? What does the denominator represent?
Numerator - total number of parts; Denominator - Total parts in the whole.
500
Convert the following improper fraction to a mixed number in simplest form: 138/10
13 4/5
500
5/17 + 1/2 =
27/34
500
6 5/8 - 3 5/6
2 19/24
