At university, he wanted to learn how to give life to inanimate matter and when he eventually discovered that he could do so through science, he set out to find corpses to use as material to make his creation.
Because it would sound too far-fetched and he has no proof and so he would just sound like a madman

Overpowered by a a mixture of pain and pleasure so he withdrew, unable to bear those emotions

The author and friends were at a lake near Geneva and they were telling ghost stories and this is what the author came up with

Meant to be a cautionary tale about searching too far and too deep for knowledge and Victor wanted to make sure the letter writer wouldn't make the same mistakes he did

Elizabeth got sick then recovered but Frankenstein's mom got sick and died due to taking care of Elizabeth. When he got to university, his professors were shocked that he had studied so ardently outdated knowledge
