What is mush, and when/why do we learn about it?
What is mush is boiled coarse corn meal. It was put into a trough in which the children would eat from like pigs; some used some form of tools to eat, but none had silverware. We learn about this in the beginning of Chapter 5 to show how typical slave conditions were, in particular, when it came to being fed. This shows that though Daniel Lloyd was somewhat kind to Douglass, his life was still nowhere near pleasant, as he was still a slave and viewed and treated as one.
200
Differentiate between direct and indirect characterization.
What is direct characterization occurs when the author TELLS us about a character using an adjective, or describing word or phrase. Indirect characterization occurs when the author SHOWS us about a character through their S.T.E.A.L. We then have to make an inference about what each of these elements SHOWS us about a character by coming up with our own adjective.

Analyze the following quote "...he is now, as he was then, as highly esteemed and as much respected as though his guilty soul had not been stained with his brother's blood" (Douglass 14). Who said it about whom and why?
What is this quote was said by Frederick Douglass in reference to Mr. Gore's lack of consequence, namely guilt, when it came to the brutal murder of Demby. Frederick uses the term "brothers" because, to Frederick, we are all human despite the color of our skin, a lesson far from being realized by whites in power at the time. Mr. Gore did not view his deed as wrong, because Demby was not a person to him, but a piece of property.

Compare and contrast Frederick's masters in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5.
While Frederick lives on Colonel Lloyd's plantation, his old master is Captain Thomas Auld, Colonel Lloyd's clerk and superintendent. As a child, Frederick ran errands for Thomas Auld's wife, Lucretia as well as helping Daniel Lloyd, whom has somewhat of a connection to Frederick. Frederick was too young to do much else on the plantation at this point in his life. His new masters, in comparison, are also Aulds, as Hugh Auld is Thomas Auld's brother. When Frederick arrived at Hugh Auld's his job was to take care of his son, Little Thomas. Frederick noted his mistress had an unusually pleasant demeanor.

What is this quote was said by Mr. Gore in reference to the harsh and strict manner in which he disciplined the slaves; these are his words of justification for his actions. If people did not have to face justice for murdering slaves, even when the murder committed was a known fact, then what does this show us about slave times?
What is this shows us that the judicial system did not represent the slaves whatsoever; they were not entitled to protection under any laws, nor were they allowed to testify in a court of law. This also shows the role skin color played when determining the severity of a murder; black on white would be immediately punishable by death, while white on black was just another item swept under the rug and forgotten. This exemplifies the dehumanization of slaves, as their deaths were meaningless and not protected by law.

Give reasons for why Frederick Douglass would want to devote half of Chapter 5 to different anecdotes about the murders of slaves by their owners.
What is Frederick Douglass is able to accomplish through vivid description the fact that slave murders at the hands of masters was an all-too-common experience in his times. He is also able to both directly and indirectly characterize the types of slave owners whom commit such murders, as he delineates the seemingly trivial reasons for ending another human being's life. This goes to show how little slaves were thought of and how they were not viewed as human beings, but rather property, worth mere dollars and cents to replace.
