What two things are the starting point in making a presentation persuasive?

TOPIC and AUDIENCE: Consider what matters about those two.

“If his years as a soldier taught him anything, it’s that caution is the best policy in this sort of situation.”

Ethos

Why is "rhetoric" called "an art"?

It is different for everybody in the same way that art is experienced differently by everybody.

100

How does repetition DO Logos?

 1. helps remember a main idea and 2. gives multiple chances to add info about the main idea .

My daughter use this endangered seal n her presentation that Hawaii is a great state to visit. List the mode(s) of appeal you see in it, and explain what each is doing for her main point.

Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal

Pathos: they are CUTE, which makes people want to go see them (which is her main point).

Logos: they are "endangered", which means we might have to hurry if we are going to see them (which is her main point).

Ethos refers to the _________ of the __________.

Credibility of the Speaker
200

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: we have not only the fingerprints, the lack of an alibi, a clear motive, and an expressed desire to commit the robbery… We also have video of the suspect breaking in. The case could not be more open and shut."

Logos

200

If my topic is REALLY science-y, and my audience are 5-year-old kids, then which mode of appeal should I probably avoid?

Logos: they probably don't have the prerequisite math and science classes to get it.

200

What do you call the feeling that comes along with the metaphor, simile, or allusion that you use?

Connotation.

200

My son used this visual in his presentation about Alaska. Which is the Mode of Appeal AND why is it better than just giving the number of square miles of the state?

Logos: The point is that the state is BIG. My son knew that it is easier to appreciate the scale with a comparison to familiar states, rather than just a huge number that looks like every other huge number.

300

What is an "anecdote?"

A short story that connects to the point you are making.

300

"You don’t need to jump off a bridge to know that it’s a bad idea. Why then would you need to try drugs to know if they’re damaging? That’s plain nonsense." WHICH TWO ARE PRESENT HERE?

Logos and Pathos:

Jumping off a bridge has a DANGEROUS connotation (that's the Pathos).

Also, it is logically connected to how drugs are also dangerous things to do.

300
If you use an allusion to a REALLY smart philosopher or scientist, what is the effect on the audience?

Helps with Ethos: they might think "oh, this speaker is very smart, too, because he knows about Einstein's theories."

300

True or False: Great speeches might make people feel really bad.

True! Bad feelings (toward the view opposite of yours) are very helpful in persuading others.

300

Ethos is about "credibility". True or False: based on his expertise, Lebron gives Ethos to this ad.

False: he is a basketball player, so he has expertise in sports. Not soft drinks.
