Imagine the following: You are eating some steak. Its flavor is positively EXQUISITE. Unfortunately, something about it is wrong. What? WHAT? WHATTTTT?! You wonder in an agony of uncertainty what could be wrong. For days, you wonder: what was wrong with that steak?!!!! You pull your hair out. You cry constantly. After years of this misery, you realize: It was rather BLAND. That's it!!! Salt! It needed salt! So, at the next dinner you have with steak, you take a small bite. It is bland, but this time, you know just what to do. You cry out, joy radiating from every pore: "Please, pass me the salt!"
Would it be good manners to pass both the salt and pepper?
No. Pass just what they ask for.
