What is a character foil? Think of two characters who represent a foil, from something we have read this year or from media you have viewed outside of school. 

A character foil is when readers can identify specific traits about an individual (protagonist) because of how much they contrast with another character in a scene.  

Ex: Tybalt and Benvolio represent a foil because of the opposite way they react to fighting. Tybalt is aggressive & Benvolio is peaceful.

A hyperbole is an exaggeration made for emphasis. 

Ex: Romeo saying that his eyes would turn to flames if he ever saw someone more beautiful than Rosaline in Act I of Romeo and Juliet.

"When the devout religion of mine eye / Maintains such falsehood, then turn tears to fire" (1.3.94-95). 

This is a hyperbole because Romeo is saying that if he sees anyone more beautiful than Rosaline his eyes may as well turn to fire. This is dramatic irony because we know that Romeo is going to think someone is more beautiful AKA Juliet

The least common combination of character types is a flat and dynamic character because this means a character does not have complex traits, but goes through a change in a story. 

Ex: The Grinch!!

What is the characterization shown here and how do you know? 

 “‘Then  I wish I’d never been born!’ I shouted, ‘I wish that I were dead! like them!’” (Tan 7).

Hint: Ji-ming says this to her mom. 

This is an indirect characterization of Ji-ming and we learn that she has a complex relationship with her mother that causes her to be cruel through speech / effect on others.
