Shout outs = external recognition and praise; Shout ins = recognizing and praising self. Shouting someone out for something they did in the kitchen, shouting yourself in for something you  did. We do this to acknowledge each other’s work as well as ourselves.

What are essential skills, and why do we focus on them at Future Chefs? 

Essential Skills are the skills that we believe young people will need for success in learning, work, and life. 

We believe what young people learn in our space is transferable to any industry and pathway they choose such as communication, taking initiative, problem-solving, etc.

How do you set up the dishroom? And what two buckets must be put in the kitchen? 

Turn on the dishwasher, fill the three-bay sinks, soap water, rinse, and sanitizer.

What is Attitude and Gratitude? And Why do we do it? 

Attitude is something that is weighing you down and gratitude is what is lifting you up. We do this to know where everyone is during their day. That way we are aware of our actions and can respect what another individual is bringing to the class.

Hot stuff (when carrying something from the oven or stovetop or opening the oven) 

Behind/corner (the other person does not see you coming from behind or a corner in the kitchen like the dish room or hallway)

Knife/Sharp (when you are carrying a knife from the dish room or to use to cut)

The purpose of a group agreement is to create an open and respectful environment in which teams can work together creatively and individuals feel safe, sharing their ideas and opinions.

What are quick breads? And two examples. 

Bread made with a leavening agent (such as baking powder or baking soda) that permits immediate baking of the dough or batter mixture. There's no kneading, shaping or rising required.

What is searing? And how would you go about roasting potatoes in the oven? 

Cooking food at very high heat with very little oil in a pan. The purpose is not actually to cook the food all the way through, but rather to develop a dark brown, caramelized crust on the outside.

Preheat oven to 425 F, clean potatoes and dice into 1 inch pieces, toss with vegetable oil/herbs/salt/pepper, place on baking sheet, and roast 30-45 minutes till brown and tender.

Walk us though the basic steps of making chocolate chip cookies.

1. Preheat the oven to 350.

2. Cream the softned butter and sugar together.

3. Mix in eggs and vanilla extract

4. Add in sifted flour and leaveners. 

5. Mix in chocolate chip cookies 

6. Scoop and bake for 10-12 minutes.
