What is the most futuristic part of your city?
The most futuristic parts of our city are our hyperloop networks because it can take you anywhere in our city in 1 minute making daily commutes easier.
What industries drive the economy in your city? What types of jobs are available?
jobs include fishermen, teachers, sanitation workers, factory workers, and more. Fishing industries, Component producing, Teaching, and more drive the economy in our city.
What energy sources did you choose to power your city? How did these sources affect your city and its residents?
We used geothermal power to power our city. These sources affected our city and it’s residents by making their air and water more clear and healthy
What resources did your team use to learn about engineering?
We used books, videos, movies, past competitors, and teacher advice, websites, Noah’s dad gave us advice, magazines and online articles to learn about engineering.
What processes did you use to stay on schedule?
We used our own due-dates to stay on schedule, for example on December 5th our separate paragraphs were due.
What is the most futuristic part of your city due to the electrical power sources chosen and why?
The most futuristic part of our city due to the electrical power sources chosen is the geothermal component factory which is powered by geothermal power. It is futuristic because it is totally carbon neutral.
How does your city support low-income or vulnerable residents?
We enforce laws that make everybody’s minimum wage three times as much as is needed to support a family of 9.
What trade offs did your city and/or its residents have to make due to energy sources chosen?
We had to give up gasoline and diesel power and generators. We also had to compromise to include hyperloops.
Did your team have any disagreements about your project? How did you solve them?
One disagreement about the project was about people not pulling their weight as much as others. We solved this by talking it out civilly and we agreed on a time we could all meet.
How did the engineering design process help you create and develop your future city?
IT HELPED US BY GUIDING US TO MAKE PLANs and constantly revise.
What innovative and futuristic technologies in your city. What is your city using for power production and storage and how has this reduced your city’s impact on the environment?
Some innovative and futuristic technologies in our city are the hyperloop networks. Our city is using closed-loop geothermal systems to produce electricity and standard electric grids to transfer electricity and heating pipes to transfer steam from geothermal plants and excess steam from the turbine sections. This has reduced our impact on the environment by removing open loop systems, which are hard on the environment. Closed loop systems recycle the same water over and over not wasting any.
Describe your city’s transportation system. Is it public or private?
Hjalteyri’s public transportation includes all- electric buses, taxis, and trains.
What types of engineers were involved in designing your city?
Structural Engineers, Transportational Engineers, and Civil Engineers, Horticultural engineers.
What was a challenge you encountered when building the model or creating the presentation? How did you overcome this challenge?
WE GOT INTO ARGUMENTS AND SOLVED THEM BY TALKING IT OUT AND REVIEWING THE PLANS and also agreeing on times we could meet.
How do residents in your city communicate with each other?
They talk in English like normal residents. Everyday an electric mail truck comes around and delivers mail.
What is an example of innovative technology in your team’s city design?
An example of innovative technology is our geothermal powered part factories.
What does your city offer for entertainment and culture?
Our city offers theaters for entertainment. Also, we have museums and shopping centers, libraries, and playgrounds!
What factors did you consider while laying out the zones in your city? Are your zones separate or mixed use?
Some factors we considered were that factories were away from houses and amenities were close to hotels and houses. Our zones are separate.
How did your team decide how to divide responsibilities?
One person did the intro paragraph, one did the problem, two did the solution, and 2 did the conclusion. Then we put them together and edited it together.
How did you design and build the moving part for your model?
Once we found out about the fan, we thought we could use that. We bought a motor kit and put it together
How does your city attract and support a diverse population of residents? How does your city’s design ensure equal access and opportunity for people with disabilities?
Our city attracts residents by our beautiful waterfalls and glaciers. Also, we have 45 minute lunches and we offer free vegan lunches. For people with disabilities we offer diverse jobs like novelists, poets, artists, composers, movie scripts, and more. In our city, our hyperloop has a person at each stop to help with your needs.
Did any of your team’s initial goals evolve as you worked on your project?
Yes. We decided to not only upgrade our city, but make it a revolutionary design.
