Cognitive bias is a mental shortcut that influences our thinking and decision-making

Systematic error in thinking which affects how we process information, perceive others, and make decisions.

Can lead to irritational or unjust thoughts or judgments and is often based on our perceptions, memories, or individual, cultural, and/or societal believes.

Give an example of cognitive bias.

Any stereotype, halo effect, etc.

Assuming someone is not good at math because they belong to a specific gender or ethnic group, without considering their individual skills or achievements.

If someone is physically attractive, people might automatically perceive them as more intelligent or kind, regardless of actual evidence.

What is so different about implicit bias than all the other biases?

Implicit bias is the unconscious attitudes, stereotypes and unintentional actions (positive or negative) towards members of a group merely because of their membership in that group.

These associations develop over the course of a lifetime beginning at a very early age through exposure to direct and indirect messages.

When people are acting out of their implicit bias, they are not even aware that their actions are biased. In fact, those biases may be in direct conflict with a person’s explicit beliefs and values.
