How does something become "negatively charged" and "positively charged"?
When you rub two materials together, negative charges get knocked and collect on a material. The material that collects the negative charges is now negatively charged. The material that got its negative charges knocked off is now positive because it has more positive charges than negative.

Why does a balloon rubbed with wool (or hair) stick to the wall? Explain in 3 steps!
Step 1: rubbing the balloon knocks negative charges off the wool or hair. The negative charges collect on the balloon, making it negative. Step 2: The balloon's negative charges repel negative charges in the wall. This leaves a row of positive charges on the outside edge of the wall. Step 3: The balloon's negative charges is attracted to the positively charges on the wall so they stick!
