She should not use wire or metal plates because metal is a good conductor of thermal energy. It lets heat pass through it quickly, which would mean the coat would not keep in any of Mr. Tannoia's precious warmth and he would freeze to death, being sure to give Claire a bad grade as he died.

Conservation of matter is the idea that no matter is created or destroyed. I can be changed physically or chemically, but it is never destroyed or created.
An example is burning a piece of paper. The ashes might weigh less after it is burned, but that is likely because some gas escaped when the chemical change took place.
Explain how Mr. Tannoia knows that his friend Robert the smiley face balloon is full of particles and not blood and guts like a human?
Mr. Tannoia blew up the balloon, so he knows there is no blood or guts inside. He also sees that the balloon has shape even though it is seemingly empty.
Patrick loves sugar so much that he believes one particular cup of sugar he keeps beside his bed grants his wishes. Unfortunately, Edward loves eating sugar, so he finds the cup and pours water over it, thinking he'll have a delicious drink. Patrick snatches the cup back and tears up. Is his friend lost forever?
