Drill instructor made soldiers drop suddenly to the ground and stay perfectly still for two hours in sweltering heat.  No one was happy about this or understood the point until many months later when they were out patrolling in Vietnam and had to do that exact thing in order to not get shot by the enemy.  They were able and prepared because they had already done it before.
