100

The process that uses energy from the sun to make food from water and carbon dioxide.

What is photosynthesis?

100

Photosynthesis takes place in these cell parts.

What are chloroplasts?

100

Things that get or find their own food.

What is a heterotroph?

100

Explain and draw a molecule on the whiteboard.

See whiteboard.

A molecule is two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds, which form the smallest unit of a substance that retains the composition and properties of that substance.

Eg. water

100

List all the major nutrients used by human body.

Carbohydrates, Protein, Water, Fats, Minerals, Vitamins and Fibre.

200

State where the raw materials used for photosynthesis are found.

Carbon dioxide- found in the atmosphere

Water- is found in the soil and absorbed into the roots.

200

Photosynthesis uses light energy, carbon dioxide, and ______ to produce oxygen and sugar.

What is water?

200

What is a food chain?

Food chains show a single pathway taken by nutrients and energy through the trophic levels.

200

Explain and draw a compound on the whiteboard.

See whiteboard.

A compound is a substance that results from a combination of two or more different chemical elements, in such a way that the atoms of the different elements are held together by chemical bonds that are difficult to break.

Eg. glucose, carbon dioxide

200

What is the role of complex carbohydrates in one's diet?

They are useful as they provide long-lasting, constant amounts of energy.

300

The tiny pores in the bottom of leaves that take in carbon dioxide from the air.

What are stomata?

300

The by-product, known as a waste product, that is made from photosynthesis that all living things need to breathe.

What is oxygen?

300

What would happen if the producer in a food web dies suddenly?

The food web would be disturbed and as a result, the primary consumers (herbivores) population was decreased and by extension, the secondary and tertiary consumers as well.

300

How does liquid changes to the gaseous state?

Boiling

Increasing the kinetic temperature of the particles.

300

What's the role of protein in one's diet?

Assist growth.

Heal wounds and repair damaged parts of the body.

Your hair, nails and muscles are made from protein.

400

Bubbles in the photosynthesis experiment.(Gizmo Lab)

What is oxygen?

400

Living organisms that use photosynthesis

What are plants?

400

What does the arrow represent in a food web?

The arrows that show which organism eats another also represent the flow of energy along the food chain.

400

What is a mixture? Give one example.

Mixtures are made up of two or more substances that are not chemically combined with each other.

  • Seawater: A mixture of various salt and water.
  • Air: a mixture of various gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon, neon, etc.
  • Ink: A mixture of coloured dyes.
400

Write the steps on how to test for protein in an egg.

  1. Place one-two spatulas of an egg into a test tube or 1 cm3 if the sample is liquid. Add about 1 cm3 of water to the tube and stir to mix.
  2. Add an equal volume of potassium hydroxide solution to the tube and stir.
  3. Add two drops of copper sulfate solution and stir for two minutes.
  4. Record the colour of the solution.

Proteins are detected using Biuret reagent. This turns a mauve or purple colour when mixed with protein.

500

Write the chemical formula of photosynthesis?

This formula 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2.

500

Describe the two stages of photosynthesis?

Light stage-light energy is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen molecules combine to form O2 which diffuses out of the leaf and into the air.

Dark stage- hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to form glucose (C6H12O6).

500

Construct a food chain on the whiteboard using the following organism:

Frog, python, corn, grasshopper and eagle

Identify the primary consumer, secondary consumer and tertiary consumer.

See whiteboard

500

What is an element? Give three examples of elements found in the periodic table.

A pure substance made from only one type of atom is called an element.

500

Write the steps on how to test for reducing sugar?

  1. Place two spatulas of the food sample into a test tube or 1 cm3 if the sample is liquid. Add about 1 cm3 depth of water to the tube and stir to mix.
  2. Add an equal volume of Benedict's solution and mix.
  3. Place the tube in a water bath at about 95°C for a few minutes.
  4. Record the colour of the solution.
