Inheritance
100
Where are genes found?
On DNA, in every cell in your body.
100
Give an example of an inherited trait.
Eye color, hair color, etc.
100
When a gene changes randomly what is it called?
A mutation
100
Give an example of a genetic disorder.
Angelman syndrome, Canavan disease, Charcot, Marie–Tooth disease, Color blindness, Cri du chat, Cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy Haemochromatosis, Haemophilia, Klinefelter syndrome Neurofibromatosis, Phenylketonuria, Polycystic kidney disease, Prader–Willi syndrome, Sickle-cell disease, Tay–Sachs disease, Turner syndrome
100
From whom do you inherit genes?
Your parents
200
Genes determine a person's...
Traits
200
What is a trait?
A quality or characteristic of an organism
200
When a mutation is helpful and give the organism a better chance of surviving and reproducing, we call it...
An adaptation
200
Give an example of a genetic predisposition.
Alcoholism, aggression or violent behavior, etc.
200
Name one person you SHARE genes with, but do not inherit genes from...
Sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousins
300
The actual sequence of DNA makes up an organism's .....type
Genotype
300
What are the visible, observable results of a person's genotype?
Phenotype
300
What is an example of a positive adaptation in an organism?
Camel's humps, camouflage, thick eyelashes, warm fur, etc.
300
What could a person do if they learn that they have a genetic predisposition to alcoholism?
Avoid using alcohol, be aware of the dangers of alcohol, self-educate, etc.
300
If a person's genotype includes both alleles, for example Bb, what is the visible or observable trait called?
The dominant trait
400
Compare DNA to an object we use almost everyday. How is it like that object?
DNA is like an instruction booklet, or cook book, that contains sets of information that determine an organism's traits.
400
Give an example of an inherited behavioral trait.
Cat arching its back, salmon swimming upstream, etc.
400
What is the term for a variety of organisms with varied genotypes in one environment or ecosystem?
Biodiversity
400
What could a person do if they learn that they have a genetic predisposition to obesity?
Avoid eating fatty foods, read/research how to prepare healthy foods, exercise everyday, make regular doctor's appointments, etc.
400
If a person's genotype can be written bb, and their trait is not visible in persons with genotype BB or Bb, what do we call this type of trait?
Recessive trait
500
This is the name for a particular version, type, or variation of a gene? Example: blue eyes.
Allele
500
Fill in the Punnett square for a cross between parents: BB and bb. Assuming the gene encodes for eye color, what are the traits of the offspring? Brown eyes are dominant.
Bb, Bb, Bb, Bb = all offspring have brown eyes
500
Why are biodiversity and variation important?
In order to have a higher chance of survival, organisms need to have variation among their population. Variation allows a greater chance of survival when there are drastic environmental changes. After a catastrophic event, if a population has high variation in genes and traits, some organisms are likely to have genes that allow them to survive the drastic change.
500
What is service learning? What is one thing you have learned during this course that you think would be useful for other people to know?
All of it! Especially genetic predispositions
500
Fill in a Punnett square for a cross between parents with the following genotypes: Tt and Tt. Assume the gene encodes for height in plants, tallness being dominant. What are the resulting genotypes and phenotypes?
TT, Tt, Tt, tt = three tall plants, one short plant
