5 themes of geography
Decide the type of Theme:
''Spain is to the East of Portugal''
Relative Location
What are fold mountains?
They are long, relatively narrow belts of mountains with parallel ridges and valleys
What are the three types of volcanoes according to their activity? Explain each one
Active (volcanoes which have erupted in the last 80 years)
Dormant (Resting, but which may erupt again in the future)
Extinct: (dead and will not erupt again)
What is weathering?
It is a process that breaks rock apart
What are joints?
They are natural cracks or lines of weaknesses in rocks
What are Latitude and Longitude lines?
Latitude lines: A set of imaginary lines that run parallel to the Ecuator
Longitude lines: A set of imaginary lines that go around the poles and run parallel to the Prime Meridian
What are the three types of plate boundaries?
Destructive, constructive, conservative
What are the 2 types of volcanoes according to their shape? Mention one characteristic
Shield (gentle upper slopes, steeper lower slopes) and stratovolcanoes (steeper slopes and narrower bases)
What are the three types of weathering?
Physical, chemical and Biological
Which type of rock is more resistant to weathering and why?
Igneous and metamorphic rock have a greater resistance as they are made of interlocking crystalline and not granular texture as sedimentary rock
Decide the type of Theme:
An underground train that connects two cities
Region functional
They are the deepest area on the Earth's surface
Explain the three main things that come out of a volcano?
Gases (mostly water vapour, sulfur and carbon dioxide. they are poisonous)
Liquids (molten rock - lava)
Solid (Pyroclastic material
Explain oxidation
It is a process in which oxygen is in direct contact with rocks that contain iron minerals causing them to desintegrate or rust
In what conditions does weathering occur faster and why?
In Humid (wet) tropical areas, because of their constant rains which accelerates chemical reaction
What is geography and what features does it study?
It is the study of the use of space on Earth and the interactions that take place there. Physical and natural features
What features does a constructive plate have?
Earthquakes, ocean ridges and volcanoes
What is the difference between a crater and a caldera?
Craters are usually less than 1km wide. Calderas are bigger, caused when a volcanic cone collapses into a empty magma chamber
Explain exfoliation
Thick layers of rock peel off due to a large diurnal temperature range, which makes rock to expand and contract, causing them to breack little by little. this process gets faster with the presence of water
What is the main proccess in frost climates and why?
Freeze and thaw because of the abundant frozen water accompanied by a decent range of temperature which allows it to melt and freeze again quickly
Mention the correct theme
Vineyards in Mendoza due to the right cliamte of the region
Human environmental interaction
Describe why the plates move
Because of convection currents. Hotter areas of rock in the mantle melt, become liquid, lighter and rise. Cooler areas gain weight and sink. This movement allows magma to escapethrough the mid atlantic ridge, which then solidifies creating new crust
Mention 5 dangers of volcanic eruptions. Choose one and explain it
Ashh falls, Pyroclastic flows(very hot solid material that travels very fast and may be the cause of death of surrounding comunities), mudflows, acid rain, post eruption famine, volcanic gases
Explain carbonation
What is the main process occuring in deserts?
Exfoliation, because of their large diurnal temperature range
