Spatial perspective
geographers see the word spatially, anything that occupies space.
Map distortion
when a globe is flattened out, it becomes distorted by at least one of these four properties - area, shape, distance, and direction, because of the spherical shape of the earth. Taking a 3d shape and making it 2d causes map distortion.
Periphery
rural and less developed than the core.
Demographic transition model
the shift in population characteristics as a country industrialized.
Federal States
Numerous regional governments or self governing states in addition to a national government. Ex: USA, Russia, and Brazil
Relative Location
the location of a place relative to other places, we use relative location when giving directions to people.
Map scale
the ratio between the distance between two locations on a map and the corresponding distance on Earth's surface.
What are the 7 major tectonic plated and the minor tectonic plates?
Major - North American, South American, Pacific, Antartican, Australian, African
Minor - Indian, Arabian, Scotia, Nazca, Caribbean, Juan de Fuca, Philippine
Formal regions
Also called homogeneous regions, have at least one characteristic in common. Example - USA
Globalization
the worlds increasing interconnection. Hollywood movies might be translated in dozens of different languages and distributed worldwide - ex of globalization
Latitude
runs laterally, parallel to the equator, you say latitude first when determining latitude and longitude.
Diffusion
refers to the spreading of something from one place to another, and might relate to the physical movement of people of the spread of disease, or the diffusion of ideas, technology, etc.
Plate boundary
where two tectonic plates meet.
Functional regions
United by a particular economic function, sometimes called a nodal region. Example - Los Angeles County
What is the relationship between the core and periphery?
economic exchange between the core and the periphery is usually one sided, creating wealth for the core and patterns of uneven development. These interactions contribute to the economic stability in the periphery. If the core can remain underdeveloped, they are more likely to sell cheap goods to the core, which generates more wealth for core areas and contributes to their influence and economic strength.
Absolute Location
references an exact point of Earth and commonly uses specific coordinates like latitude and longitude.
Core
the commericial focus for the area where most good and services are exchanged. Described as urban.
Convergent Boundary
When two plates slide toward one another.
Vernicular regions
based on people's perceptions. An example would be the southeastern region of the US often referred to as "the south."
Transform boundary
where two plates slide past one another.
Longitude
lines converge at the poles and measure distances east and west of the prime meridian.
Hinderland
more sparsely populated than the core, often where goods are sold in the core manufactured. Rural area.
What are the three global population centers?
Europe, East Asia, and South Asia
Unitary states
the central government has the most power. Ex: China, UK
Divergant boundary
where two plates slide apart from one another.
