Hemisphere
An area of relatively level high ground.
Plateau
An imaginary line around the middle of the Earth that divides the Earth into eastern and western hemispheres. Measured as zero degrees longitude.
Prime Meridian
An imaginary line around the middle of the Earth & divides the Earth into Northern & Southern hemispheres. Measured as zero degrees latitude.
Equator
A broad inlet of the sea where land curves inward.
Bay
A type of map that represents human-created boundaries of major geographic regions, such as country borders, roads, population centers, and landform boundaries.
Political map
A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water.
Peninsula
One set of directions that people around the world use (north, south, east, and west). Uses the rising and setting of the sun as a reference point.
Cardinal directions
The measurement of distance north or south of the Equator.
Latitude
An artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation.
Canal
The measurement of distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Longitude
A place on the coast where boats may find shelter, especially one protected from rough water by piers, jetties, and other artificial structures.
Harbor
Refers to the relationship (or ratio) between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground.
