*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

What are the layers of the Earth?

Core, Mantle, Crust

100

What is the difference between Magma and Lava?

Magma is hot liquid UNDER the earths surface. Lava is hot liquid ON the earths surface.

100

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

Tell me all three different plate boundaries AND describe their movement.

Convergent, Moves toward one another

Divergent, Moves away from one another

Transform, Slides past each other

100

What does "Sphere" mean?

Bonus - extra 20 points- Why does this suffix makes sense when referring to our planet?

Sphere means 3D circle.

Bonus: Because our Earth is a Sphere. :)

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

Define Earthquake and Volcano

Earthquake: the sudden shaking of Earth’s surface from the Earth releasing stress.

Volcano:  an opening in Earth’s surface(Crust) through which lava, gas, and ash escape

200

What are the "Spheres" of the Earth?

Atmosphere, Lithosphere, Asthenosphere

200

What plate boundary(s) deconstruct land? Which plate boundary(s) construct land?

Convergent deconstructs land, Divergent constructs land.

200

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

The theory that Earth's lithospheric plates are in constant motion.

and

Where two of the Earth’s lithospheric plates meet

Plate Tectonics: The theory that Earth's lithospheric plates are in constant motion.

Plate Boundary: Where two of the Earth’s lithospheric plates meet.

200

What Earth layer is also known as (synonymous) with an Earth Sphere? Tell me what the layer and sphere are.

Crust is synonymous with lithosphere

200

What is the most common standard of measuring the magnitude of earthquakes based on seismic activity?

What range is severe?

The Richter Scale

6-10 is severe earthquakes

300

****DOUBLE JEOPARDY***

How many different types of Crust does our Earth have? What are the names for those types of crust?

There are two different types of crust. There is oceanic and Continental.

300

Define Magnitude

The size of an earthquake

300

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

What is the name of the Scientist who came up with the theory of TECTONIC PLATES?

Alfred Wegner theorized that Lithospheric plates are in constant motion.

300

Which Layer(s) of the earth contribute to the cooling, and therefore sinking, of Earths matter?

The crust and upper mantle cool Earths matter, causing it to sink.

300

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

Define Epicenter:

The point on the Earth's surface (lithosphere) where the Earthquake starts.

400

Define Lithosphere

The solid layer of Earth (Crust & Upper mantle) that is surrounded by rock/stone.

400

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

What geological feature is made at every possible Transform Plate boundary? OvO, CvC, and CvO

EARTHQUAKES

400

1.) Tell me every type of Divergent Plate Boundary

2.) Tell me the one feature that is distinct for each type.

1.) CvC and OvO

2.) CvC= Rift Valley and OvO= Mid-Ocean Ridge.

400

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

What layer(s) of the Earth contribute to the heating, and therefore rising, of Earths Matter?

The Core heats up matter which causes it to rise.

400

What are the waves that transmit (send out) energy as a result of an earthquake.

How many main types are there?

Seismic waves. There are two main types; P and S waves.

500

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

How do Earths lithsoperic plates move? What is the process called and describe how it works *Must use the words heating, cooling, and gravity.

Convection Currents. Heating, Cooling, and Gravity causing Earths matters to rise and fall. The core heats up matter in the asthenosphere causing it to ruse. The Crust and mantle cool matter causing it to sink. The force of gravity also helps the matter sink. This creates movement of the plates.

500

Tell me the steps that lead to a Volcanic eruption IN ORDER of first to last.

FIRST, Magma rises into the crust from the mantle at certain boundaries

SECOND, Magma is stored in a “magma chamber”

THIRD, rocks, gas, ash, and lava flows from the eruption

LAST, Volcanic gases mix with the atmosphere

500

1.)Tell me every type of Convergent Plate Boundary

2.) At what boundary or boundaries is SUBDUCTION common?

1.) CvC, CvO, and OvO

2.) Subduction happens with OCEANIC crust. Therefore subdcuction occurs at CvO and OvO

500

What sphere do Earths lithospheric plates "float on?" Define it.

Asthenosphere: The weak soft solid layer of the earth 100 -250 km below Earths surface.

500

*** DOUBLE JEOPARDY!!!****

What is the difference between P and S waves?

P waves (Primary Waves) travel faster and will arrive at a seismograph first. They can travel through solid, liquid, and gas. S waves (Secondary waves) travel only through solid and travel slower than P waves.
