Name the three kinds of rocks we learned about
Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rockss
What is weathering?
Weathering is to break down into smaller pieces with natural processes
How does an earthquake occur?
What is a seismograph?
A seismograph is a tool used to track the seismic wave movement through the earth
What do you call the material inside a volcano/outside a volcano?
Inside: magma
Outside: Lava
How are sedimentary rocks created?
They are created by putting pressure on smaller sediments over time to create a singular rock
What is erosion?
Any process or force that moves sediments to new locations
What causes tsunamis?
Underwater earthquakes/shift in plates underneath the ocean can cause tsunamis?
What are the two different kinds of weathering?
Chemical Weathering and Physical Weathering
What is the rock cycle?
The rock cycle is the continuous cycle in which rocks are created, destroyed and recreated
They are created by taking other kinds of rocks and applying enough heat to change their minerals, but not enough to turn them into magma.
What are hydrothermal vents?
deep sea geyser that releases extremely hot and mineral-rich water through the cracks of the earth
How do volcanic eruptions occur?
Volcanic eruptions are caused by a change of pressure in the magma chamber pushing the magma up and out of the volcano.
What are the 3 different kinds of mountains?
Dome mountains, fold mountains, and fault-block mountains
Who was Alfred Wegener?
He is the man that hypothesized the continental drift. He did not have evidence to support it at first and people did not agree with his ideas.
How are igneous rocks created? Why do the mineral pieces look larger or smaller?
Igneous rocks are created from magma coming up from the earth's mantle. The minerals are different sizes because of how fast they were able to cool. Fast cooling = small minerals, slow cooling = large minerals
The study of earth, how it changes, and its processes is called what?
Geology
Give an example of how cultures explain how natural disasters occur.
Pele and her sister stealing her lover explains volcanic eruptions.
The crow carrying the whale to the mountain top explains earthquakes.
What can you often find in sedimentary rock that can show us what kind of animals used to be on this earth?
Fossils
Label the picture with: crust, mantle, inner core, and outer core
Name a type of sedimentary rock.
Limestone, sandstone, shale
What is subduction zone?
The subduction zone is where one plate moves under another plate.
Name three volcanoes we learned about.
Bonus 100 points if you name the island Mr. Rock talked about yesterday.
Yellowstone, Tambora, Mauna Loa, Vesuvius
Bonus: Westman Island
The explanation for the moving, sliding, and shifting under the earths crust is called what?
Plate tectonics
What is Pangea? What are the names of the continents that made it up?
Pangea is the supercontinent that existed before all the seven continents were separated. The seven continents are North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.
