The Italian city of Venezia once passed a law banning goldfish bowls. The argument was that a curved glass bowl distorts the fish’s view of reality, which counts as cruelty.
Fish kept in the city must have properly oxygenated tanks that allow them a clear view of their surroundings.

Yastrzemski    Hall of famer Carl Yastrzemski played for the Boston Red Sox for all 23 years of his major league career. He won the Triple Crown by leading his league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in. In 2012, Detroit Tiger Miguel Cabrera became the first player since Yastrzemski to achieve the same historic feat.

The system is not always well-funded, and the result is large stray populations in some areas — but the legal protection is real and enforced.
