Is it okay to walk around the building without an adult?
NO!
Is it okay to go anywhere in the community without a staff member/trusted adult?
NEVER. Always make sure you know where your staff member(s) are!
What do we do if there is a conflict while riding the van?
Immediately yell/ask for help from the adult riding in the van or the driver.
Who do we ask for help from when...
-We are unsure what to do in the group setting (activity directions, homework help, etc.)
-We need more supplies
-We need a snack
-We need a bathroom break
The staff assigned to your group!
Is it okay to ride the van without wearing your seatbelt?
NEVER! Always tell a staff member if you see a peer that is not wearing their seatbelt.
Is it okay to share food with others?
NEVER. We do not know if the other person has a food allergy.
Is it okay to touch anyone while in the community? (strangers, other kids, etc.)
NEVER! We need to stay together as a group; there should not be any moment where you could interact with a stranger.
What do we do if a peer gets hurt in the group setting?
-Get a staff member immediately!
-Do your part in ensuring the peer gets the help they need. Do not crowd the peer(s), especially if staff is already assisting them. If you see other peers trying to watch or get involved, remind them that we need to be respectful & give them space to address the emergency.
Who do we ask for help from in the community setting if our Glass City staff is unavailable?
We always ask for help from staff members of the outing FIRST. For example, if we are lost at the zoo, we will always ask for help from a staff member at the zoo FIRST before anyone else.
Is it okay to share/eat food on the van?
NEVER! We do not want the van to get messy, as well as giving food to an individual on the van, and they have an allergic reaction that could create an unsafe situation.
Is it okay to touch a peer or staff without their permission? Or even at all?
NO! We must ALWAYS ask permission before touching other peers or staff.
Is it okay to go somewhere without asking a staff member first? Why?
NO! If we do not share where we are going, even if nearby, our staff members could think we are lost, taken, etc.
What do you do if a STAFF member gets hurt?
-If there is more than one staff available in your group, immediately seek the assistance of another staff member.
-If the hurt staff member can still speak, ask the staff member if there is anything you can do to help.
-If there is no other staff available, find a staff member of the community outing you are at and ask for help.
-If there are no other staff members of Glass City or the outing location, find an individual WITH CHILDREN who may be able to assist the hurt Glass City staff member.
You are in crisis and need time to calm down with staff away from our group; who can we ask for help from? Who do we ask FIRST if it is okay to take a break?
-Always ask your staff assigned to your group first if you may take a break with another staff member outside of your group. We need to know where all kids are at all times.
-The Social Workers! This includes Miss Ruby, Miss Katrina, & Miss Sarah.
-This also includes Mr. Erich, Miss Kate, & Miss Jen if the social workers aren't available.
Is it okay to be standing up in the van? (Whether the seatbelt is still being worn or not)
NEVER! Think of what could happen if the van were to get into an accident.
The staff member may also get distracted by you, which could cause an accident.
What is the best thing to do if a peer is having a meltdown/crisis/etc.?
-Get an adult if one is not already assisting the peer.
-Give them space! Ask if they need help, but if they can't talk at that moment then do not interact with them.
-Move items away from peers that could hurt themselves or others.
Do we choose which staff members directions we want to follow?
NO! We must make sure we are listening to all staff with us. We cannot only listen to the ones we choose to listen to.
What do we do if there is conflict in the community with another child or adult?
Immediately leave the situation and find your Glass City staff member quickly. DO NOT CONTINUE TO ENGAGE WITH THEM.
Who is always safe to accept help from?
-Any Glass City staff
-Police
-Firefighters
-Hospital staff
Only accept help from those in a uniform that you know ARE these listed people. Not just from a random stranger who says they are police but has no way to prove that to you.
Is it okay to move around the van/move seats while the van is in motion?
NEVER. Any sudden movement could cause you to fly around the van & could potentially be hurt.
What should you do if there is a fight/conflict with another peer? This includes if you are experiencing a conflict or witnessing a peer conflict.
Step away from the conflict & get a staff member if one is absent.
Do we follow directions from adults in the community outside of Glass City staff? What about staff members of where we are at? (pumpkin patch, berry picking, etc.)
NEVER! We will only follow directions from Glass City staff. We will NEVER listen to an adult we do not know. But we WILL follow directions from the staff at our outings, who are there to assist us.
What should we do if we are separated from our staff member(s) in the community setting?
-Find a STAFF MEMBER at the location you are at & ask for help.
-If there is no staff working at the current location, find an adult WITH A CHILD/CHILDREN with them & ask for help. An adult with a child may be safer to seek help in an emergency due to knowing how to assist a child already.
Is it okay to scream or fight to get the driver's attention?
NO! We need to always utilize our other staff members on the van before using our driver for assistance.
If multiple kids are attempting to speak to the driver, wait for your turn to speak unless it is an emergency. ONLY YELL if there is an emergency.
This is all to avoid any danger while riding in the van.
