What are the differences between the Sunnis and the Shiites?

Sunnis:

-The caliph should be chosen by leaders of the Muslim community and viewed the caliph as a leader, not as a religious authority. Sunnis believed that the inspiration came from the example of Muhammad as recorded by his early followers.

Shiites:

-The only true successors to the prophet was descendants of Muhammad's daughter and son-in-law. They believed the descendants of the prophet were divinely inspired.
