Explain the stages of intercultural competence; denial, defense/reversal, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration

  1. Denial - refusing to accept difference as a reality. The most ethnocentric stage

  2. Defense/reversal - recognition of difference but attached to one's cultural identity/viewing difference negatively. Reversals are characterized by a disregard of one’s culture.

  3. Minimization - views difference superficially/focuses on shared humanity. Characterized by tolerance (which can breed contention) we need engagement

  4. Acceptance - Understanding of other's worldviews and their impact.

  5. Adaptation - the ability to shift one’s perspective and behavior/put themselves in others’ shows.

6. Integration - a pluralistic sense of identity.
