What is the heliocentric system?

  • The heliocentric system, originally developed by Nicolaus Copernicus, is the belief that the Earth orbits around the sun, with the sun at the center of the solar system. This replaced the belief by the Church that the Earth was at the center of the solar system, called the geocentric system. This heliocentric system was defended by Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei.
