A SMART goal setting is a specific system of goal setting that helps students be more focused and responsible for their learning.  The SMART acronym is:

Teachers can make a to do list so a goal is to always check off everything so when you are able check off everything on your list you can feel accomplished. A teacher should always have a goal set and if they don’t then they might not have motivation to work on anything.

The Action Plan section introduces students to the upward arrow and gives students an idea of how to set a goal, identify things they can do to meet their goal, and choose something specific to work on over a period of time.

Why is it crucial to set a goal that is able to be measured?


Setting a goal that you can measure is crucial because it allows you to track your progress and stay motivated. Having quantifiable data or criteria makes the goal measurable.

You should establish concrete criteria for measuring progress. Ask yourself these questions: 

  • How much?
  • How many?
  • How will I know when it is accomplished?

How can organization be considered an important goal? 


Being more organized allows the student to not stress as much on what they need to work on or get done. This makes for good mental and or physical health because if you are stressed you’ll most likely not want to do your work. Being organized can help your confidence in the long run, helping tackle future goals with less anxiety. With that new-found confidence, you  can continue to set more ambitious goals.

Talking about setting goals affords a good opportunity to ask questions or share their feelings or thoughts. This give give students a chance to ask their parents and talk to them about what their goals are and see what they did to achieve it.

Why should involving parents be one of a teachers goals?



- Having a parent’s positive attitude and support towards their children’s education is considerable. It can inspire and empower the child to develop good learning habits. 

-  Also, a teacher should have a goal of parent communication, having communication with your students' parents is important. You want to be able to communicate if there is an issue with one of the students. You want your students' parents to know you’re willing to communicate with them.

A S.M.A.R.T goal for a teacher can be that they want to improve the quality and frequency of their classroom discussions. 

(They could set a goal to have discussions every week (Specific, Achievable) for the rest of the school year (Time-bound, Measurable) on a subject the class is studying (Relevant). The SMART goal criteria are flexible enough that they can mold them to a specific interests as a teacher to make sure they're hitting the areas where they're most wanting to improve)
