The Basics
The number of holes are there on a traditional golf course.
What is 18?
The maximum number of clubs in a player's bag.
What is 14.
This verdant area surrounding the hole has the shortest cut grass on the course so the ball can roll smoothly into (or by) the hole.
What is the green?
This phrase refers to when a golfer either loses his/her ball and must replace it or for some reason needs to move their ball to a different location.
What is a drop?
Golfers should remain this while other players are addressing their ball.
What is silent and still?
It is this player's turn to hit their ball toward the hole.
Who is the player who is furthest away from the hole?
The flat club used around the hole to roll the ball in.
What is the putter.
Most par 4's and 5's have this area of short grass leading up toward the green where golfers hope to hit their ball to avoid trouble.
What is the fairway?
A golfer must hold the ball at this height while taking a drop.
What is knee height?
Stepping aside so a faster group (possibly less players) can pass you and keep up their pace of play is called letting someone this.
What is play through?
The standard number of shots needed to complete a golf hole.
What is par?
This piece of equipment is used to hold the ball up off the ground for only the first shot of each hole (if a golfer chooses to use it).
What is a tee?
This not always square area is where each hole begins.
What is the tee box?
These markers signify areas of the course such as ponds and creeks where if a golfer hits their ball they have the option to find the point of entry, draw a line from the flag stick, through that point of entry and beyond and drop their ball on that line while taking a one shot penalty.
What are red stakes?
When on the putting green and walking to your ball, a player should try to avoid this.
What is stepping on the other player's puting line.
Doing this to improve your lie is not permitted and will result in a one stroke penalty.
What is moving your ball?
This largest club is used to hit the ball maximum distances off the tee.
What is the driver?
These areas of sand can sometimes remind players of war. Hopefully they can escape in one shot....
What are bunkers or sand traps?
If a player hits their shot outside these markers they have no choice but to rehit from the same place and take a one stroke penalty.
What are white out of bounds markers?
The area off grass that is either damaged or removed after a swing that should be replaced.
What is a divot?
A player can be given this is they break a rule such as moving their ball, hitting the wrong ball or playing out of turn.
What is a penalty stroke?
The PGA does NOT permit the use of these devices which can aid a golfer or caddy in figuring out how far they should hit their next shot.
What are range finders?
Golfers hope to avoid these bodies of water or other danger zones as they make their way to the hole.
What are hazards?
When a golfer's ball is not in a hazard or out of bounds but they deem it impossible to hit it so they move it two club lengths no closer to the hole and take a 1 shot penalty.
What is an unplayable?
A golfer is disallowed to stand behind another player as they putt by the rules, however it is an unwritten rule that he or she can not stand here.
What is on the throughline (or on the direct opposite side of the hole)
