What do you call water that falls from the sky?

Precipitation.

100

Which type of winter precipitation is most dangerous.

Freezing rain is most dangerous.

100

What should residents do if a Category 1 hurricane is approaching?

They should NOT evacuate, they should stay in place. But, they should stock up on supplies if utilities fail.

100

What kind of boundary results in a rift volcano?

A divergent boundary results in rifts.

100
What's the difference between climate and weather?
Weather is a day-to-day occurrence. Climate involves weather patterns over time.
200

What do we call the moisture produced on the ground on cool summer mornings where the temperature passes a specific point?

"Dew"
200

Where do most hurricanes form that affect the Untied States?

The Gulf of Mexico

200

What should people do if a Category 5 hurricane is approaching?

They should evacuate immediately.

200

What state is home to hotpot volcanoes?

Hawaii is made from hotspot volcanoes.

200

Which tropical climate has dense, lush vegetation, broadleaf plants, and high biodiversity?

The rain forest

300

The process of water vapor changing into water droplets?

Condensation

300

What do we call the area where tornadoes are most common in the US?

Tornado Alley

300

Why is New Orleans particularly susceptible to damage from a hurricane?

It lies below sea level and is at a bend in the Mississippi River. It relies on a system of levees which failed in Hurricane Katrina.

300

What volcano erupted in Washington in 1980?

Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980.

300

What does one call the climate around the temperate latitude zone?

Middle-latitude climate.

400

What is the prefix or suffix relating to precipitation-producing clouds?

Nimbo- clouds are precipitation producing clouds.

400

Explain the difference between how hail and sleet are formed.

Hail is formed by updrafts in thunderstorms, holding ice up as it gets larger and larger. Sleet is formed when warmed rain passes through a cold layer of air, freezing into ice pellets. If it hadn't warmed, the precipitation would fall as snowflakes.
400

What is another name for a hurricane in other parts of the world? There are TWO, give one.

Typhoons and cyclones are hurricanes.

400

What best describes an effusive volcanic eruption?

No explosion! Lava flows from the vent. An explosive volcanic eruption involves an explosion from the vent.

400

What climate has little or no life and has temperatures below freezing year-round:

Polar icecap, tropical, tundra, or savana?

Polar icecap.

500

Describe how clouds form.

Warm air rises, expanding and cooling.

The colder air results in vapor condensing onto tiny pieces of dust.

Tiny droplets for around each dust particle. When billions come together, clouds!

500

Explain the process that leads to freezing rain

Precipitation drops. It then goes through a layer of warm air by the ground. When it gets to a freezing layer on the ground, the rain immediately turns to ice, forming a layer of ice on the ground.

500

As a city rebuilds, how can it be built to reduce damage due to a hurricane? Give at LEAST 2 things they can do.

They could build on higher ground away from water.

They could elevate structures and roads.

They could build flood walls or levees.

They could build systems of drainage.

They can develop networks that allow for speedy evacuation.

500

What would a super-volcano do to the earth's climate?

The earth would enter a cooled period resulting from the blocking of the sun by ash. As a result, animals would die off and food supplies for humans would change dramatically.

500

Describe how both hibernation and estivation work. How are they the same and how are they different?

Both hibernation and estivation allow for animals to enter prolonged sleep in periods in which their continued existence as normal would not be possible. Estivation is when an animal enters a dormant state in a hot period (often under a dried lake). Hibernation is a dormant state during a cold period.
