Democracy
Democracy is a system where citizens elect representatives to govern on their behalf.
The word “democracy” comes from two Greek words:
Demos – the people
Kratos – power or rule
Democracy literally means “rule by the people.”
Monarchy
A monarchy is a form of government in which the Head of State is a monarch (a king or queen) who usually holds the position for life and typically comes to power through hereditary succession (passed down through a family line).
A monarchy can be:
Absolute – where the monarch has almost total authority
Constitutional – where the monarch’s powers are limited by a constitution and elected bodies
In modern times, most monarchies are constitutional monarchies, including many Commonwealth Caribbean nations.
Republic
A republic is a form of government in which the Head of State is not a monarch, but is instead a president who is elected or appointed for a fixed term.
The word comes from the Latin res publica, meaning “public affair”.
In a republic:
Leadership is not hereditary.
The people hold power through elected representatives.
The constitution is the highest authority.
