What is the procedure for a client to see and obtain copies of their PI?
What is a client has the right to look at or receive copies of their PI, but the client must make the request in writing. If staff doesn't have the PI but knows who does, staff will tell the client how to obtain it. Staff will respond to the client within 30 days of receiving his/her written request. In certain situations, staff may deny the client’s request. If staff does deny the client’s request, staff will tell the client, in writing, the reasons for the denial and explain the client’s right to have his/her denial reviewed (for a list of potential reasons for denial, acceptable reasons for appeal and/or guidance on granting denial reviews, see 45 CFR, Section 164.524, pages 893-896)
