Describe, in simple terms, the rules of shortening and combining prayers during travel.

Prayers which are originally 4 rak'at are shortened to 2, and the other prayers remain the same. Dhuhr and Asr are combined together and Maghrib and Isha are combined together. Fajr cannot be combined or shortened. Maghrib also cannot be shortened.

Dhuhr and Asr can be prayed at any time during dhuhr time all the way before the end of Asr time. You can pray maghrib and Isha together at maghrib time or at Isha time (from sunset to midnight).

Is the janazah prayer fard 'ayn or fard kifayah? In your answer, also explain the difference between the two.

Janazah prayer is fard kifayah.

There are two types of obligations. Individual obligations that every Muslim must carry out (salaah, fasting, giving Zakaah, etc) called Fardh ul -?ayn. There are communal obligations (also known as Fardh Kifaayah) that at least some people in the community must carry out on behalf of everyone else. If no one carries them out, then everyone in the community is held accountable.

If someone came and argued that it is permissible to build structures over graves, using the example of the Prophet's grave as proof, (saying that the masjid was built over his grave) - how would you respond to this?

The Prophet's grave was originally not in the masjid. He was buried in the house of Aisha, outside the masjid. However, later on, when the masjid expanded due to necessity, the grave was 'included' in the area of the masjid, but this doesn't mean the masjid was built over the grave. In fact, that area is completely closed off and no one can enter it.
