Random Human Body Facts
100

What is activation energy?

The minimum amount of energy required for a reaction to occur.

100

What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors?

Biotic factors are living - grass

Abiotic factors are not living - wind

100

What are the two types of waves?

Transverse and logitudinal

100

In DNA: A binds with_____ and C binds with _____.

In DNA: A binds with _T__ and C binds with _G___.

100

How many bones in the human body?

206

200

Define oxidation and reduction.

Oxidation is the loss of electrons

Reduction is a gain of electrons

200

State one transfer and one transformation of the water cycle.

Transfers: run off/precipitation/percolation

Transformations: evaporation/condensation/melting/freezing

200

State the factors that affect the time period of a pendulum.

length of pendulum

Gravity

200

Where does transcription happen?

In the nuclues.

200

How many hair follicles does the average human head have?

100 000

300

100g of water increased in temperature from 15C - 25C. How much energy was gained?

Q=mcΔT = 100 x 4.18 x 10 = 4180 J

300

Draw a food chain with 4 organisms.

Grass → Mouse → Snake → Hawk

300

Sketch and annotate a diagram of a transverse wave.

300

State two differences between plant and animal cells.

Plant cells have cell walls, chloroplasts and a large vacuole. Animal cells do not.
300

How many skin cells does a human shed every hour?

600 000

400

How does an ionic bond form?

a metal give electron(s) to a non metal

The metal becomes positively charged and the non-metal becomes negatively charged.

Positive and negative ions attract to each other and a bond is formed.

400

What is eutrophication?

A large algae growth due to extra nutrients in the water. Water plants lack sunshine - no photosynthesis. Plants die and decomposers use up the oxygen which can then kill the fish.

400

Why is light is refracted when it moves from air to water?

The light slows down and bends towards the normal because the water is more dense than the air.

400

Draw a label a nucleotide.

400

How many different colours can a human see?

10 million

500

Explain how a lithium ion battery works.

Lithium is oxidized at the anode and loses electrons. The electrons travel through the wire to the cathode which is a lithium cobalt oxide complex.

500

How are the organisms in a sealed mesocosm able to stay alive?

Photosynthesis happens using sunlight, COand H2O and produces glucose and O2. Respiration uses O2 to break down the glucose and produce CO2 and H2O which can be reused for photosynthesis.

500
Explain what happens to white light if it passes through a prism.

The light is refracted as it enters the prism. As the beam bends towards the normal the white light splits into the different colours (wavelengths) of light in the visible spectrum. As they leave the prism they bend even further to give a rainbow effect.

500

What is a mutation?

An error that occurs in DNA replication.

500

How many different scents can the human nose detect?

100 trillion
