Energy is the ability to do
work
Which type of energy is being described?
Energy of chemical substances that is released when the substances undergo a chemical reaction and transforms into other substances. Some examples include batteries, food, and gasoline.
What is a power plant?
A power plant makes electricity. There are different kinds of power plants, and they make electricity in different ways. Many of them are coal power plants and natural gas power plants. They burn fuel and use the heat to run a machine that makes electricity for us to use.
Name 2 non-renewable resources
Oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy
Natural
What is potential energy
Energy that is stored in something. It is energy that has not been used yet. For example, food is potential energy as once we eat it, we gain energy.
Which type of energy is being described?
This energy allows machines to work. When we plug in our computer, the outlet provides this energy. This energy comes from other sources of energy like burning of fuels or the energy from natural resources like hydro dams or solar power.
Electric Energy
What is pollution?
Pollution is anything that makes the earth dirty and unhealthy. Land, air, and water are all affected by pollution. Pollution takes up space on our land.
Name 3 renewable resources?
Sun, wind, water, geothermal, and biomass
Does the moon emit or reflect light?
Reflects light.
What is Kinetic energy?
Kinetic means energy in motion. When riding your bike, you are using kinetic energy.
Which type of energy is being described?
This type of energy formed when it is moved between two things, one of them is hotter than the other. When something is provided with this type of energy, the particles inside begin to move faster and the temperature of the object rises.
Heat energy.
What is fossil fuels?
Fossil fuel is a for non-renewable energy sources such as coal, gas, and oil. These fuels originate from plants and animals that existed in the geological past (for example, millions of years ago)
What does non-renewable mean?
A nonrenewable resource is a substance that is used up more quickly than it can replace itself. The supply of a nonrenewable resource is finite, which means it cannot easily be replenished. Nonrenewable resources are extracted directly from the Earth.
What is Pitch?
Pitch refers to the frequency of a sound wave. This is what makes it possible to hear higher or lower sounds. A chirp of a bird is higher pitch and a lions roar is a lower pitch. The higher the pitch, the higher the frequency of sound. The lower the pitch, the lower the frequency of sound. The human ear can detect a wide range of frequencies that allow us to hear different sounds.
Is a ball resting at the top of a hill representing kinetic or potential energy?
Potential
Which type of energy is being described?
This type comes from things that move (like wind). Wind energy (from windmills) can be turned into electrical energy which is easy to use. A car moving also possesses this type of energy because it is moving. This type of energy is always kinetic.
Mechanical energy
What is opaque mean? Grade 4s
Opaque means that the object blocks light so that light cannot travel through the object. Some objects that are opaque are basketballs, wood, metal, trees and books
What does renewable mean?
Renewable resources are those resources that continue to exist despite being consumed or can replenish themselves over a period of time even as they are used. They include the sun, wind, water, geothermal, and biomass. The disadvantage of renewable resources is that they may not be available for use when needed.
What is the doppler effect?
The doppler effect is a change in frequency and wavelength in a sound wave. It is caused by the change in distance between the source of the sound wave (causer) and whoever is hearing (observer) the wave. When a source of sound moved in relation to you, the pitch changes. The pitch of the sound allows you to determine whether the source is moving towards you or away from you. You can also estimate how fast the sound is moving based on the pitch.
Is a puck sliding across the ice displaying kinetic or potential energy?
Kinetic
Which type of energy is being described?
This is the earth’s main source of energy as it provides light. This energy allows plants to grow, which produced food for all living things. This also heats up some places more than others which causes air moving from cooler places to warmer places and results in wind. Wind energy is then captured to make electrical energy. Thus, this energy is VERY important!
Solar or Sun energy.
What do the vibrations do for sound? Grade 4.
A sound wave is a transfer of energy that travels away from the vibrating source. Your voice is the vibrating source as you create vibrations that travel through the air for others to hear you. The vibrations themselves need a medium to travel. A medium can be a solid, liquid, or gas (ex. metal, water, air). When the sound waves leave the vibrating source, they cause the surrounding medium to vibrate. As the sound waves more through the medium the particles vibrate forwards and backwards.
What is a problem with solar or wind power?
It is not always sunny or windy, so we can't rely on it.
Name an animal that uses echolocation?
Bats, whales, dolphins, a few birds like the nocturnal oilbird and some swiftlets, some shrews and the similar tenrec from Madagascar are all known to echolocate. Another possible candidate is the hedgehog, and incredibly some blind people have also developed the ability to echolocate.
