A measurement of the average kinetic energy of particles in an object is....

temperature

100

What type of heat transfer is given off when we feel heat from a space heater?

radiation

100

A material that conducts heat easily is a good _______________________.

thermal conductor

100

Why do we use oven mitts or potholders to protect ourselves from hot pans/pots?

They are good insulators!

200

Heat travels from....

hot to cold

200

What is energy that is spread through touching? (when two solids are in contact)

conduction

200

A material that conducts heat poorly is a good ___________________.

thermal insulator
200

Why are pots made of metal?

They are good conductors!

300

What is heat measured in?

Joules
300
What is the transfer of energy through waves called?

radiation

300

A lower heat capacity means a material...

changes temperature quickly

300

When does heat stop flowing between two objects?

When they reach equilibrium (same temperature)

400

What is heat?

heat is thermal energy that flows between objects - it is the amount of thermal energy that an object releases

Describe the process of convection

In gases and liquids, hot parts rise and cool parts sink.

This is because when there is more heat, particles move faster and spread out more. When particles are more spread out, density is lower and less dense substances rise.

400

What determines a material's heat capacity?

The way that particles are held together

400

Name all the types of heat transfer occuring in a pot of water boiling on the stove

conduction - since the pot is touching the stove and heat is traveling through contact

convection - the water is moving inside the pot

500

How does friction cause heat?

When objects are rubbed together, particles from each object bump into each other causing them to vibrate a little more. Higher vibrations mean more heat.

500

Why are infrared rays called infrared rays?

Because they are close to red visibile light.

500

Which is the slowest type of heat transfer and why?

Conduction, because energy is transferred by bumping into particles and so it has to bump into all the particles. This process takes time.

500

Why is water used to cool down hot machinery?

Water has a low heat capactiy - it does not get as warm as materials with a high heat capacity. Heat transfers from the hot machinery to the water, therefore cooling down the machine but without warming up the water as much as something like oil.
