The verse "Today I have perfected your religion for you" was revealed immediately after the Prophet appointed Imam Ali (a) as the master of the believers. Why did this appointment complete and perfect the religion of Islam?

Because a religion without clear, divinely-appointed leadership (Imamah) is incomplete. The laws and teachings (from the Quran and Prophet) need a perfect, sinless interpreter and guide (the Imam) to protect them from being changed, lost, or misunderstood after the Prophet's death. The appointment of Imam Ali (a) established this permanent system of guidance (Wilayah).
