Discrete vs. Continuous Data
This type of data uses whole numbers you can count, like the number of students in class.
What is discrete data?
This data describes qualities, like the colour of a pet.
What is qualitative data?
Data you gather first-hand, like surveying your own class.
What is primary data?
This graph shows changes over time, like temperature each day, with connected lines.
What is a (broken) line graph?
The number that shows up most often in a list, like 7 appearing three times.
What is the mode?
This type of data can have endless possible values in a range, like someone's height.
What is continuous data?
This data uses numbers, like how tall a tree is.
What is quantitative data?
Data from books or the internet that someone else collected.
What is secondary data?
Use this graph for counting things, like favourite fruits, and it can compare two groups.
What is a bar graph?
Add up all numbers and divide by how many there are; round if needed.
What is the mean?
Distance run in a race is an example of this data type because it can be any number, like 5.3 km.
What is continuous data?
"Red, blue, or green" is this type of data because it's about descriptions, not counts.
What is qualitative data?
Asking friends their favorite colors is this type of data collection.
