How many stages of the nafs are there?

The first stage of the Nafs is Ammarah, which is the animal stage.
In this stage the actions of a person are not appropriate for a normal human being.
The person is prone to evil and is ruled by emotions. He cannot control temptations. He makes bad decisions.

If the person continues to improve, he reaches a stage of Lawwamah, which is the stage of being self-critical.
The final stage:
The final stage of Nafs is Mutma’innah or Heavenly stage.
