What is ordination? What are the main components of the ordination service?
ORDINATION assures the anointment of the candidate by the Holy Spirit to accomplish the special ministry of shepherding, preaching, teaching, and administering the Sacraments.1 pt.
Give any four of the five following statements 4 pts. (Make sure to know ALL the statements)
Ordination is not a private act. The congregation has to recognize the candidate’s call from God and pray for Divine Grace. So it is conducted always in the middle of the Holy Communion Service.
The celebrant, the Metropolitan / Bishop reads out a declaration of the faith of the church and the candidate draws the sign of the cross and puts his signature in the register under the cross.
Laying on the hands by the bishop upon the candidate represents the continuation of the apostolic authority.
As an expression of his dedication to the Lord’s ministry, the candidate is to get his hair removed from the top of his head in a circular shape the previous day and in the form of a cross during the ordination service.
Special dress Cassek & Kapa and girdle are given to the candidate after special prayers as symbols of authority to administer sacraments.
Jesus said to her, “I am - the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. - Do you believe this?”
Describe the reaction of those present when Lazarus came back to life.
When Lazarus came back to life, the reactions of those present were a mixture of awe, shock, and amazement. According to the Gospel of John (John 11:38-44), here’s how the scene unfolded:
1. **Astonishment and disbelief**: The people who had gathered to mourn for Lazarus were initially shocked and astonished. They had already witnessed the burial and were mourning the loss, so when Jesus commanded Lazarus to come out of the tomb, they were understandably stunned. Many were likely in disbelief, as resurrection from the dead was something they had never witnessed before.
2. **Witnessing the power of Jesus**: As Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, the crowd realized they were witnessing a powerful and miraculous event. They had seen Jesus heal the sick, but raising someone from the dead, especially after four days, was a demonstration of divine authority that left many people in awe.
3. **Glory and faith**: Some of the onlookers were moved to believe in Jesus as the Messiah as a result of this miracle. John 11:45 says that many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in Him. However, others were skeptical or hostile, and some even went to the Pharisees to report what had happened, which eventually led to the plot to kill Jesus.
4. **Emotional reaction from Mary and Martha**: Martha and Mary, Lazarus’ sisters, were overwhelmed by the miracle. Martha expressed her faith in Jesus’ power earlier when she said, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world" (John 11:27). When Lazarus emerged from the tomb, they must have experienced both joy and amazement, seeing their brother alive again.
Overall, the reaction was one of deep amazement, faith, and some disbelief, with many believing in Jesus because of the miracle, but others beginning to plot against Him. This event marked a pivotal moment in Jesus' ministry.
How can we identify with the boy’s offerings?
We can identify with the boy’s offerings in two contexts.
The first one is when we place our offertory on Sundays. The priest or bishop offers it to God and 'gives thanks' like Jesus did for the boy's lunch. Part of the thanksgiving is the request to bless (multiply) it and use it for the enhancement of His kingdom. It is a very touching part of our worship service that is absent in many other worship places. God multiplies what we share. It is a very good practice for all to pray along quietly as the celebrants offer sincere thanks to God.
Secondly, it reminds of a critical time in the history of the Mar Thoma Church. The Mar Thoma Church had lost all her property at one time. God multiplied the humble offerings of the members of the Church. Those who shared resources knew like Andrew that it was very little for such a great need. But it is only natural for many children to think that little boys and girls got too little to give. But the center point of the miracle is the small offering by a little boy that fed over 5,000 when Jesus multiplied it.
Explain the Salt & Light of the world.
The teaching of Jesus, Salt & Light of the world is
described in Matthew 5: 13-16 and this is part of the Sermon on the Mount
which is a collection of Jesus’s teachings and ethical saying
ii. This is targeted towards Jesus’s disciple and Jesus
delivered this message while sitting on a hill that rose above the city of
Capernaum
iii. The sermon on the mount has a sharp contrast compared
to the method of delivery of the Law of Moses on Mount Sinai. The Law of
Moses came down with Thunder, lightning, voice of trumpet and the sound
came to people from the unseen presence in the cloud, whereas the
Sermon on the mount began with Blessedness
iv. As salt Jesus teaches us Christians to spread flavor to
people around us, making this earth acceptable to God and commend the
earth to His mercy and restrain corruption or decay by leading a pure life
v. Jesus compares us to light of the world. He is transferring
His light to the disciples telling them to be the light to the people and to
rescue them from darkness and from the hurting world
