Give an example of a homogeneous mixture.
Homogeneous mixtures are solutions (every part of the mixture is the same even though there are different substances mixed together). Ex: paints, vinegar, air, Kool-Aid
Anything that has no fixed shape and can flow.
What is a fluid?
This is the formula for pressure and the correct units.
Force divided by area. Pascals
All substances are made up of these
What is a particle?
A cloudy mixture in which droplets or tiny pieces of one substance are held within another substance that can be separated
What is a suspension?
Which fluid has a definite volume and can take the shape of its container?
Liquids
The brakes in your car use this system.
HYDRAULIC system.
In these, particles are the same.
What are pure substances?
Temperature, sizes of pieces, and stirring.
What are factors that affect the rate of dissolving?
This affects density when you dissolve a substance in another which increases the number of particles.
An enclosed fluid transmits pressure equally in all directions.
What is Pascal's Law?
Particles can never touch. This is because they have this between them.
What is space?
You can see the different substances that make up the mixture.
What are mechanical mixtures?
Pouring a fluid down a ramp and timing how long it takes to get to the bottom.
What is the ramp method of testing?
Machine oil has a density of 0.9 g/mL. Ethyl alcohol has a density of 0.8 g/mL. 1) Which has greater density? 2) Which will float on top of the other one?
1) Machine oil has greater density (0.9 > 0.8) 2) Therefore, knowing that denser things SINK, the ethyl alcohol will FLOAT on top of the machine oil, because it's density is lower.
A dentist's drill is an example of this.
What is a pneumatic system?
According to the particle model of matter, if this increases, then the speed of the particles will also increase.
What is the temperature?
A cloudy mixture where the droplets or tiny pieces are so small that they do not separate out easily.
What is a colloid?
The amount of matter in a given volume. What is the formula?
What is density? Density equals mass divided by volume.
The ballast tank in the submarine acts very similarly to the swim bladder in a fish. For both, they increase their average density to sink. The fish's bladder expels air to sink, whereas the ballast tank does this to sink.
The ballast tank fills with seawater, which pushes the air in the ballast tank through the top vents to the outside. This increases the average density of the submarine and so it sinks.
This state(s) is compressible. These state(s) are not compressible.
Gas. Liquids and solids.
What are the 4 points in the Particle Theory of Matter?
1. Everything is made of particles
2. Particles are always moving
3. Particles have spaces between them
4. Some particles can have attractive forces toward other particles
