What term describes a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment?

Ecosystem!

An ecosystem is a community or group of living organisms that live in and interact with each other in a specific environment

100

What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical change?

A physical change changes the form/state but not the substance while a chemical change creates new substances

100

What do we call the flow of electric charge through a conductor?

Electric CURRENT

Electric current refers to the amount of electricity flowing through a circuit.

100

Which planet is known as the Red Planet?

Mars is called the Red Planet because its surface is covered in iron oxide (rust), which gives it a distinctive reddish-orange color visible from Earth.

If Ms. Rea could see anyone in concert, who would it be?

The Lumineers !!!!!!!!!!!!! Duh.

200

What do we call a relationship between two organisms living closely together where each benefits?

a) Mutualism

b) Commensalism

c) Parasitism

d) Competition

Mutualism!

What is the difference between an element and a molecule? Provide an example of each!

An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom, like oxygen (O) or gold (Au), while a molecule is formed when two or more atoms chemically bond, which can be atoms of the same element (like O2) or different elements (like H2O).

200

What is static electricity? *hint: electrons!

Static electricity is the accumulation of electric charge on the surface of an object.

This charge can be positive or negative and occurs when the atoms of a material gain or lose electrons.

Which planet in our solar system has the most moons? Any guesses how many?

Saturn! As of 2025, scientists have identified 274 moons around Saturn. The planet with the second highest number of moons is Jupiter with 95 moons.

200

Name of the author of "The Hunger Games" series?

Suzanne Collins

Define biodiversity. Give one reason why threats to biodiversity are so harmful.

Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is simply the variety of all life on Earth, encompassing all animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms, their genetic differences, and the diverse ecosystems (like forests, reefs, and deserts) they form and interact within.

It's the complex web of life, from genes to ecosystems, that sustains our planet and provides essential services like clean air, water, and food.

300

What is the difference between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture? Give an example of each.

Homogeneous mixtures are uniform throughout (e.g., saltwater), while heterogeneous mixtures are not (e.g., salad)

300

What charge will a neutral material take on if it gains electrons?

Negative charge! Electrons carry a -1 charge.

Imagine that you are explaining to Grade 3 students why it gets dark at night and bright during the day. What would you tell them?

It is light during the day and dark at night because the Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours. When your location faces the Sun, it is daytime (light), and as Earth spins, that location turns away from the Sun, causing nighttime (darkness).

300

Which country invented the sport of curling?

Scotland

Explain what a food web shows that a simple food chain does not. Name one consequence of removing a top predator from a food web. Draw a diagram of both to support your answer!

Food webs show multiple feeding relationships and energy flow between many organisms.

Removing a top predator can cause trophic cascade (overpopulation of prey, vegetation loss), loss in biodiversity, etc.

400

Describe the difference between an ionic bond and a covalent bond. Explain the difference in terms of elements involved and electron movement. Feel free to use a diagram to support your answer!

Ionic bond: Occurs between a metal and a non-metal, involves a transfer of electrons from the metal to the nonmetal

Covalent bond: Occurs between two non-metals, involves the sharing of electrons between atoms

400

Describe the difference between series and parallel circuits. Draw an example of both to support your answer.

Series circuits feature a single path for current, causing all components to share voltage and fail if one breaks.

Parallel circuits offer multiple paths, providing equal voltage to each component and allowing others to function if one fails.

400

What causes a solar eclipse? Draw a diagram to support your answer.

A solar eclipse is caused by the moon coming in between the sun and Earth. The sunlight is blocked (partially) and a shadow falls on Earth.

Who is performing at the 2026 Super Bowl?

Bad Bunny

500

Describe habitat fragmentation and explain one effect that can follow from it.

Habitat fragmentation is the process where large, continuous habitats are divided into smaller, isolated patches, primarily caused by human activities like road construction, agriculture, and urban development.

This separation disrupts ecosystems, reduces biodiversity, and hinders species migration, mating, and foraging.

500

What is the total number of atoms in the formula Mg3(PO4)2? How many atoms of each element are present?

13!

3 Magnesium, 2 Phosphorus, 8 Oxygen

500

Explain what electrical grounding (earthing) is and explain why grounding is important for safety and device operation.

Electrical buildup (often referred to as static electricity or electrostatic charge) occurs when electrons are transferred between materials through friction, contact, or induction, leaving one object with a surplus of electrons and another with a deficit.

Grounding is necessary to provide a safe, low-resistance path for this excess electricity to discharge into the earth, preventing electrical shocks, equipment failure, and fires.

If you were standing on the surface of the moon and accidentally dropped your phone, what would happen to it? Would it move? If so, in which direction?

The camera will fall to the surface due to the force of gravitational attraction between the Moon and all objects on it.

However, it is important to note that this gravitational attraction is about 1/6th of that on Earth. This means that objects will fall to the surface at around 1/6th of the rate (1.6m/s²) that they would on Earth (9.8m/s²).

500

What is the largest desert in the world?

Antarctica!

Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth, covering 14.2 million square kilometers (5.5 million square miles).

Classified as a polar desert, it is characterized by extreme cold and very low precipitation, averaging less than 50 mm (2 inches) per year in the interior. It is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent.
