In our opinion- save the money and wait until your second year when you are job-searching.

What is the difference between a "theory-based" and an "experience-based" program?
One focuses more on theory (surprise!), while the other emphasizes opportunities outside the classroom.

What if I need a roommate?
Many apartment complexes can match roommates. In addition, try contacting others from your program or the Department Chair for names of students who will also need roommates.

How can I best utilize the syllabi?
READ IT. Pay attention to the course schedule and due dates so that assignments don't creep up on you. We recommend writing all due dates in your planner after you receive your syllabi to assist in time management.

What are common hobbies for graduate students?
While everyone is different, the students we've met enjoy Netflix, road trips, window shopping, going out for dinner and drinks (and Netflix, did we mention that?).

How important is it to present at conferences?
Employers will be looking for presentation experience, but every little bit helps. Don't be afraid to start small. Local conferences are great practice and less pressure.

I'm new to the area. How do I meet people?
That depends on your interests- join an organization, go to the Rec. Center, attend a religious service, or look on the University website for free campus events!

What are the benefits of forming study groups?
According to research, students who study in groups learn information 2x faster and retain information longer than those who study alone (as long as the group stays on task). Try to form groups with students in your class who have different strengths than you do; you can teach each other.

What type of deals should I look for as a graduate student?
Just like your undergraduate experience, there are many discounts available for those enrolled in college classes. College ID nights at local restaurants and bars are always a hit. Also, look into services such as Amazon Prime, which offers a free 6-month student membership; free shipping and deals!

How do I find an internship?
Think about functional areas that interest you. Your program may already have connections for you to utilize, but don't be afraid to contact an office that interests you. Most people don't say no to free help!

There are a variety of culminating experiences; ask each program what they require.

How do I navigate campus?
Every university has some sort of campus map on the webpage; don't be afraid to print it out! Also, try to walk campus at least one before classes start, so that you won't get lost on your first day.

What in the world is APA? (And do I really need to use it?)
APA is the preffered formatting style of Higher Education. It will be required in the majority of courses, so befriend it. Struggling with APA rules? Go to the PurdueOWL website. It will save your life. Literally.

How do I get my GTL on?
As a student, you will have access to the campus rec. center. However, many local gyms also offer free trials and demo classes.

Will I have opportunities to network?
It's up to you! There are plenty of opportunities to meet professionals in the field. Go to departmental meetings, join committees, and contact people who are doing great things that interest you.

How do I avoid becoming a sad and lonely graduate student?
Balance your time. We all have homework and obligations, but if you do not make time for fun then you run the risk of becoming burnt out.

Will group work be a requirement in graduate school?
Short answer- yes. While some students like working in groups, others will struggle. It can be difficult, particularly when you cannot choose your group members. Remember that you can only control what YOU do. Don't get frustrated if your project/paper is not perfect.

How do I initiate "cohort-bonding" events?
Talk with your graduate program's student organization reps; if your program doesn't have one, start one! You can also use social media to get the word out. Odds are, if you're lookin' for fun, then someone else is too.
