Using TSCOG tell me when the New Medicare General Enrollment Period occurs and when coverage is effective

TC 24001.060 General Enrollment Period (GEP)

When a caller is past his or her Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and is not eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), missed the SEP, or chooses not to use the SEP, he or she must enroll in Supplementary Medical Insurance (SMI) during a General Enrollment Period (GEP) (January 1 through March 31 of each year). Effective January 1, 2023 with the 2023 GEP, when a person enrolls during a GEP, SMI coverage begins in the month after they enroll of that year. (Previously, GEP enrollments had coverage effective July 1.) For example:

  • If we receive the enrollment request in January 2023, SMI coverage begins in February 2023.

  • If we receive the enrollment request in February 2023, SMI coverage begins in March 2023.

  • If we receive the enrollment request in March 2023, SMI coverage begins in April 2023.

For enrollment requests received after March 31 2023, the beneficiary will need to resubmit the request during the next GEP in a subsequent year.
