Grammar 101
A word expressing an attribute and qualifying a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun so as to describe it more fully.
What is an Adjective
A word that is used to connect other words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.
What is a Conjunction
This is used to show a separation of ideas or elements within the structure of a sentence. Additionally, it is used in numbers, dates, and letter writing after the salutation and closing.
What is a Comma
Pronoun(s) that indicate the person (or group of people) speaking or writing
What is First Person
A grammatical unit that typically contains a verb (or verb phrase), and which may be a complete sentence in itself or may form part of a sentence.
What is a Clause
it is a word that modifies the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or a whole clause or sentence, and which typically expresses manner, degree, or a circumstance such as a place, direction, or time
What is an Adverb
A word that precedes a noun and limits the application of that noun
What is a Determiner
This is used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters from a word, the possessive case, or the plurals of lowercase letters.
What is an Apostrophe
Pronoun(s) that indicate the person, thing, or group being spoken or written about (rather than the speaker/writer or the addressee)
What is Third Person
A word (in modern English, ending in -ing) that derives from a verb and has some verb-like properties but also some noun-like properties.
What is a Gerund
A noun, noun phrase, pronoun, or clause that forms the complement of a transitive verb and typically refers to something or someone that is affected by the action denoted by that verb.
What is an Object
A word that functions independently of other words and typically represents an exclamation or command
What is an Interjection?
This is used to connect independent clauses. It shows a closer relationship between the clauses than a period would show.
What is a Semicolon
Pronoun(s) that indicate the person (or group of people) being addressed
What is Second Person
The part of a sentence or clause which is not the subject: it typically contains a verb and any objects, complements, and adverbials
What is a Predicate
The part of the sentence which:
– is usually what the sentence or clause is about;
– often denotes the person or thing that performs the action expressed by the verb;
– usually comes before the verb;
– agrees grammatically with the verb.
What is a Subject
A word, phrase, or clause which limits or qualifies the meaning of another word, phrase, or clause.
What is a Modifier
When you join two independent clauses with a comma and no conjunction
What is a Comma Splice
Example: I am not angry with you, I am not happy with you, either.
The tense of a verb typically expresses an action that is happening now or is habitually performed or a state that currently exists
What is Present Tense
A word that typically precedes a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun and expresses a relationship between it and another word in the sentence.
What is a Preposition
A clause that is dependent on another part of the sentence, and which could not stand alone as a complete sentence.
What is a Subordinate Clause
A word, phrase, or clause is inserted into a sentence as an explanation or afterthought and is usually marked off by brackets, commas, or dashes
What is a Parenthetical
One of a pair of punctuation marks " " or ' ' used chiefly to indicate the beginning and the end of text in which the exact phraseology of another or of a text is directly cited
What are Quotation Marks
The tense of a verb typically expresses an action that happened in the past or a state that previously existed
What is Past Tense
They´re clauses that describe the result of something that might happen.
