Subject and Predicate
Every sentence has these two main parts.
What are the complete subject and the complete predicate?
A noun is more effective when it is _______________.
What is specific?
This part of speech modifies a noun or pronoun and answers "What is it like?".
What is an adjective?
This type of clause has a subject and a predicate but cannot stand alone as a sentence.
What is a subordinate clause?
This type of sentence joins two related ideas that are of equal importance.
What is a compound sentence?
Identify the complete subject in: "A talented artist drew this cartoon".
What is "A talented artist"?
Replace the noun "instrument" with a specific one: "Davida played an instrument in the band".
What is a flute, trumpet, or drum?
Identify the adjectives in: "Grandma kept the valuable pendant in a tiny envelope made of red silk".
What are valuable, tiny, and red?
Identify the independent clause: "Whenever I wiggle my ears, my eyebrows move".
What is "my eyebrows move"?
Combine these into a compound sentence: "I can’t believe it. I lost my job".
What is "I can’t believe it, and/for I lost my job"?
Identify the complete predicate in: "Cotton-candy-flavoured potato chips never really caught on".
What is "never really caught on"?
Replace "walked" with a specific verb: "Jennifer and Liam walked to school through the park".
What is skipped, trudged, or bolted?
Choose the correct word: "The taxi driver drove (skillfully / skillful) through the traffic".
What is skillfully?
Identify the subordinate clause: "Since Danny doesn’t know where our seats are, we probably won’t find him".
What is "Since Danny doesn't know where our seats are"?
This type of sentence joins two related ideas where one is more important than the other.
What is a complex sentence?
Identify the complete subject in: "The girl over there with the great batting arm is Marissa".
What is "The girl over there with the great batting arm"?
Replace "truck" with a specific noun: "The truck and car crashed at the intersection".
What is a semi-trailer or a delivery van?
In the sentence "Carra is a highly competitive individual," what part of speech is "highly" modifying?.
What is an adjective? (modifies "competitive")
Is the underlined part Independent or Subordinate? "The books that I lost never showed up".
What is a subordinate clause?
Combine into a complex sentence to emphasize you like pizza: "I like to eat pizza. It makes my breath smell of garlic".
What is "I like to eat pizza, although it makes my breath smell of garlic"?
Expand this sentence by adding to the subject and predicate: "The car sped".
E.g., "The shiny red sports car sped quickly down the highway."
Replace "worked" with a more descriptive verb: "The children worked long hours in grimy factories".
What is toiled or labored?
Correct the error: "I backed out of the room stealth and ran the water".
What is "stealthily"?
Identify the subordinate clause: "This bat, which catches harmful insects, should not be feared".

Combine these three ideas into one sentence: "I was thirteen. I went on a trip with my mother. We went to Coutts".
