What are phrases?

Phrases are a type of fragment that are missing a subject (who or what the sentence is about; it will be a noun or pronoun) and/or predicate (the main verb of the sentence telling us the action).

Dependent clauses have a subject and a predicate verb but are still fragments because they do not express a complete thought. They often, but do no always, contain subordinating conjunctions (such as AAAWWUBBIS words).
